Crab, Alaskan King Crab

Wild, Frozen, Sold by the Pound.

The largest concerns for Alaskan King crabs are fishery management and traceability. As they’re a prized product, Alaskan King crab populations are stringently managed. Examples are limited vessels permits, limited seasons, a seasonal quota, and only male crabs are harvested to allow female crabs the chance to reproduce.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Rated: Good Alternative.

Sustainability.

The reason for “yellow” versus “green” rating is because while crab pots are effective in catching crabs, these large items will harm sea habitats when dragged across the seafloor.

As for traceability, RHS can trace the product all the way to the crab vessels. Again, the King crabs are lucrative, so everyone down the supply chain is at risk of receiving the Red Ranked (by the Seafood Watch Program) Russian caught King crabs.

Safety
RHS follows their HACCP plan (preventative food safety program) to control any potential hazards. No preservatives (TPP), only a water glaze of up to 10% for frozen cooked.

Our Mission.
As a 100% transparent and sustainable seafood supplier, Royal Hawaiian was one of the first seafood processors in the country to collaborate with the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch program to ensure that we only sell products from fisheries that are responsibly harvested or aquacultured.
